The current opening hours under the new Council lease
are
October & March 7 am - 7 pm
November & February 7 am - 7.30 pm
December & January 7 am - 8 pm.
The lessee is proposing that, based on previous experience
of usage, it may be more beneficial to residents if the hours
were Oct, Nov, Feb Mar Apr, 7 am to 6 pm weekdays {extend
the season a month}
Dec & Jan 7 am to 6.30 pm and 8 am to 6 pm weekends all
months.
Your opinions of the proposal would be welcome at the meeting
DEVELOPMENT APPROVAL DELEGATION
Some members have expressed concern as to whether the
delegation for approval that has been in operation with Council
is delivering the types of development approvals the residents
wish to have or that would be delivered if more were considered
by Councillors themselves.
Also of concern is a proposal that the requirement for compulsory
submission to the Planning Committee be increased from one
Councillor requesting to three Councillors, each from different
wards. Under some circumstances this could completely disenfranchise
residents on these matters
STRAND DEVELOPMENT
The development application for the car park behind the
Library is now on display. Several community associations
are cooperating to examine the proposal, particularly in regards
to whether the limitations proposed as a result of the public
inquiry, and accepted by Council, are being adhered to.

in the streets. For your own and everybodys safety,

GOODBYE JACKIE MURPHY
It was with regret that many Greenwich residents gathered
recently to wish a pleasant retirement to Jackie Murphy, who
leaves after some 30 years at the Greenwich branch of the
library. We thank Jackie for the fantastic service and assistance
that she has given to so many of us, and the children, over
those years.
Happy retirement Jackie
ISABELLE HElM FUND
A benefit evening to raise funds to support Isabelle Heim,
a seriously handicapped child of our community, will be held
at the Greenwich Sailing Club in the form of a wine and cheese
"auction evening" at 7.30 pm on Saturday, 6th May.
Donations of goods, or services, to be auctioned would be
most appreciated.
Please contact Bill or Meg Fox on 9436 3968. If you haven't
donated for the auction, be sure to be there to buy.
GREENWICH FLYING SQUADRON HISTORIC BOOK
A handsome 'coffee table' book has just been published
recording the 75 years history of the Greenwich Flying Squadron
sailing club, at the bottom of Bay St. The book contains considerable
general history of Greenwich and makes great reading for all
interested in the past of our community. Copies can be seen
at the Greenwich and Lane Cove Libraries and at the Greenwich
Butcher, and obtained from Rosalie Lucas, 02 9427 4651. $39.95
plus $6.55 postage if required.
DEPARTED FRIENDS
It was with sadness that many Greenwich resident met twice
in the New Year to farewell two well known and loved members
of our community.
Ted Pain was a long time resident of Greenwich and
a past President of our association. A former Crown Prosecutor
and District Court Judge, Ted could, until recent years, be
seen rowing on the Harbour, and took part in veteran rowing
races overseas.
Tom Easton was well known throughout the community
for the way that he never allowed his long term illness to
prevent him and his friends enjoying life to the full.
The community gives it sympathy to the families of two of
its members, of two different generations, who will be missed
by us.
M2 FREEWAY TUNNEL
A public meeting of lane Cove Council residents will be
held on the 9th February at Cove Room, LCC offices, for them
to express their views on the proposals how being circulated
for a tunnel to by-pass the Epping Rd bottle neck between
the Gore Hill freeway and the M2 freeway
GREENWICH BATHS
The lease of the Greenwich Baths is coming up for renewal
soon, and a subject on our next meeting agenda is ideas that
residents may have for consideration by Council for inclusion
in the lease.
GORE BAY FUTURE COMMITTEE
The committee formed last meeting has commenced foundation
work under the guidance of Tom Lawson, who has taken on the
chairmanship of it. Tom will report to the AGM. Anybody further
who can and wants to contribute to the future of Greenwich
should contact Tom on 9436 1984

St fight and their plans for the future protection of Greenwich
Please note :- Meeting will start promptly at 8.00 pm and
conclude at 10.00 pm for supper.
GLENVIEW STREET PROPOSAL
The proposal to develop two sites in Glenview St was withdrawn
before it went to the Land & Environment Court. The Greenwich
Preservation Group has been invited to address us at the next
meeting on their fight, and their intention to continue to
fight against inappropriate development in Greenwich. Their
rally in Shell Park, with many prominent speakers, especially
from Save Our Suburbs, was most successful, with many Greenwich
residents present. Congratulations GPG for a successful fight.
M2 FREEWAY TUNNEL
Good news. All parties are supporting a long tunnel from
Gore Hill to bottom of Mowbray Rd. There will be an EIS with
public submissions. RTA are proposing dual lanes each way
and untreated stack ventilation but community believes three
lanes each way is essential for the future and are investigating
treated ventilation systems in use in Europe.
GREENWICH BATHS
The Council is shortly to issue the tender for management
of Greenwich Baths. If you have ideas for changes to operation,
get them to Lane Cove Council soon.
ISABELLE HEIM FUND

child of the community is at Greenwich Sailing Club, in the

GREENWICH COMMUNITY GROUPS
The Community Directory, already a valuable source of
local organisation names and contacts - is currently being
updated on our Web Page. If your groups details have changed
recently, please contact John Gebler 9436 2874. The Directory
is available on some notice boards and on request. The web
page is updated periodically, and will allow local groups
to publicise coming events and community news.
GORE BAY FUTURE COMMITTEE
Shell, in a press release, has announced that Clyde refinery
will not be closing in 2001 but will remain open in the medium
term. Just how long will depend on a number of factors but
it is unlikely to be past 2005/6. Gore Bay will continue to
be active while ever Clyde refinery operates. Its operation
beyond then is still to be determined. This removes the immediate
dangers of changes to the site, but requires our sub-committee
to continue its work in order to be ready to face a number
of possible proposals
GREENWICH VILLAGE GAMES
To avoid reducing the attendance to the Olympic Games,
this year the higher profile Greenwich Village Games will
be held on the weekend of 9/10th December. Please put this
highlight of the athletics world in your diaries now. We will
have details of team captains later . In the meantime, if
you want information, or to put your name down to help, contact
Sally Rossi Ford, 09906 7979

Greenwich Preservation Group (GPG)
GPG was born to prevent the demolition of 2 historical
homes at 19-21 Glenview Street and the construction of units
on those urban blocks. During the fight of that development
it was realised that there is a place for such a group who
can quickly respond to such situations in Greenwich, working
closely with other community groups such as the GCA. CPG is
here to stay! Their vision is "Continuing to oppose inappropriate
development to preserve the unique amenity of Greenwich"
