GREENWICH GAMES OFFSHORE
In May, Greenwich residents Dennis Smith and Helen and Bruce Hill joined a Rotary-sponsored volunteer project in Gizo, in the Solomon Islands. Another long-time Greenwich resident, Rufus Wolfson, was heavily involved in locating special supplies needed on the project.
Gizo is a small island in the northern part of the Solomons chain. Unfortunately the political situation in the Solomons has dramatically reduced tourism, even though most of the islands, and particularly the Gizo area, are extremely safe.
The project team, consisting of 20 Rotary members and friends from Sydney Cove and Tamworth clubs, was there for a total of three weeks. It built an ablution block and completed an extension to the maternity wing at the local hospital. Team members worked 8 - 4 daily, with Saturday afternoons and Sundays off for scuba / snorkelling / visiting nearby islands.
While there, a white 1992 Greenwich Games tee shirt was seen adorning the torso of a local. They are planning the Gizo Games -- with teams based on islands of origin, and games based on local activities (coconut husking, lime and spoon race, canoe racing, weaving etc).
HELPING GREENWICH SCHOOL
Greenwich Public School has registered to participate in the campaign running until 29 June at Westfield Chatswood for a share in
$70,000 worth of Apple computers and prizes.
Greenwich School now needs the local community and friends to register as a "Shop for your School Shopper" to start earning points for the school.
Shoppers register at the Customer Services Desk at Westfield. Once
registered please present all receipts for any purchase at any shop within any Westfield centre up to 29 JUNE for conversion into points for GREENWICH PUBLIC SCHOOL.
You do not have to have children at Greenwich school
CHRISTMAS CAROLIERS DONATIONS
Greenwich Caroliers are pleased to announce that $1000 worth of equipment has been donated to Mona Vale Hospital to make a section of the children’s ward more “user friendly” for adolescent patients. A Sony Playsation, TV monitor, special mobile stand and a selection of (non voilent) games are now in full use and are proving popular. There are plans for some suitable pictures. We are still on the look out. Anybody got any bright ideas? A “plaque“ ceremony will be happening soon. Many thanks to contributors.
